LeaseWeb partners with LU-CIX - LeaseWeb partners with more Internet exchanges than any other data host in Europe
07.09.2010
Luxembourg, September 7th, 2010 - LeaseWeb, a provider of advanced hosting infrastructure solutions, today announced a partnership with LU-CIX, the Luxembourg Commercial Internet eXchange. This partnership brings LeaseWeb’s peering contracts to twenty, the largest number of any data host in Europe.
Peering lessens traffic via data exchange, avoiding the use of third parties. Partnerships of this nature therefore enhance network speed and build an association of technology companies who exchange data without additional costs. Each new partnership is therefore another important step towards achieving an affordable and reliable broadband Internet service.
“Both LeaseWeb and LU-CIX acknowledge the importance of building and maintaining lasting relationships to provide a wider, stronger and more accessible Internet.” said Bastiaan Spandow, network architect at LeaseWeb, who continued to comment; “One of the major elements of the LeaseWeb network structure is the high quantity of peer to peer data sharing. This offers our users a wider, more reliable and faster network with no financial implications.”
Marco Houwen, President of LU-CIX asbl, says “We are proud to partner with such a high profile and leading data host as LeaseWeb. This is another great step forward in the successful journey of LU-CIX and we hope that this relationship is a long lasting trade off of data and services. LU-CIX has enabled now Internet access providers to address directly with low latency a huge number of Internet sites hosted by LeaseWeb and its costumers.”

LU-CIX Welcomes Orange!
09.02.2010
Luxembourg, February 9th, 2010 - We are glad to announce the arrival of Orange as a new connecting member of LU-CIX, the Luxembourg Commercial EXchange, launched in October 2009 and based on a cross-industries initiative.
Orange is becoming the 12th connecting member of LU-CIX, after only 2 months of existence of the eXchange point. LU-CIX’s approach of openness and neutrality is comparable to the other major International centers such as AMS-IX (Amsterdam), LINX (London) and DE-CIX (Frankfurt).
Claude Demuth, CEO of LU-CIX explains, “We are glad to welcome a leading company such as Orange as a new connecting member. LU-CIX is a “business enabler” in the sense that we strongly contribute to the development of e-business projects and operate a state-of-the-art technology. This positions us at the same level as the major eXchange points in Europe”.
Orange Luxembourg is proud to enter into this new relationship and to be part of Luxembourg’s most important exchange and distribution platform. This will allow us to transfer data more efficiently and in a more appropriate way between carriers and optimize the European footprint for all Orange affiliates. The customer indirect benefits are obvious, bringing faster data transfer, more proximity for both business and consumer market.
LU-CIX is more than an Internet eXchange, it is a distribution platform for new creative Internet services. Thanks to its proximity to other Internet hubs such as Frankfurt, Amsterdam, or London, LU-CIX presents a smart alternative to established Internet eXchange points.
On the technological side, LU-CIX operates a state-of-the-art switching platform and customers can be connected by FE, GE and 10GE ports. The services comprise Public Peering, Quality-of-Service Peering, Multicast and Private VLANs at competitive prices. Besides, the LU-CIX platform supports IPv4 and IPv6 and is hosted in two distinct high quality Tier-4 datacenters.

Commercial Launch of LU-CIX : " Connecting Europe in One Spot! "
15.10.2009
The commercial launch is occurring only 7 months after the presentation of the project. "Our team has been working hard over the last months, in order to respect the deadlines that we imposed on ourselves", says Claude Demuth, CEO of LU-CIX. "During the summer, we finalized the installation of the technical platform and today we are ready to connect the first customers".
The LU-CIX platform is hosted in the datacenters of eBRC at Windhof and LuxConnect at Bettembourg. Both locations are qualified as Tier-4, i.e. the highest datacenter category. For its first year of existence, LU-CIX expects to reach 25 customers, either Internet access providers or suppliers of content or applications.
"The feedback is positive", underlines Marco Houwen, President of the Executive Committee, "as demonstrated by the arrival of many new members since our creation. Also, on September 29th and 30th, LU-CIX participated in its first international meeting, the Eco Kongress, which is the Annual Congress of the German association of the Internet Industry (eco, Verband der deutschen Internetwirtschaft e.V.); the contacts made during this conference were really encouraging".
LU-CIX has indeed an important role to play. At a time when the major European Internet hubs located in Amsterdam, Frankfurt and London are facing performance and congestion problems; LU-CIX positions itself as an attractive niche player.
Marco Houwen explains, "LU-CIX operates in a state-of-the-art technical environment, proposing abundant capacities at competitive prices. The initiatives of LuxConnect and TERALINK have dramatically improved the positioning of the country on the Internet map. Thus, to link for example Brussels to Frankfurt, we can now pass through Luxembourg, instead of bypassing it. This has obviously a great impact on the distance to cover, and as a result, on the quality of service that can be offered".
"LU-CIX offers a real alternative to the established Internet highways and Internet Exchange points", summarizes Claude Demuth. "Besides, the presence of numerous high profile companies such as Skype, PayPal or Real Networks is a significant factor of attraction that we will undoubtedly benefit from".
According to the OECD, 30,6% of the national employment is directly or indirectly linked to the ICT (information and communications technologies) sector. The establishment of new LU-CIX customers in Luxembourg should cause this rate to increase even further, thus actively reinforcing the diversification of the national economy.
Luxembourg’s international connectivity rose from 58 Gbps in 2006 to more than 3,8 Tbps in 2009. "LU-CIX is an excellent initiative", Minister Biltgen agrees. "It is the missing link that will contribute actively to the transformation of Luxembourg into a true Internet exchange, thereby putting our country irrevocably on the map of the European information highways".
